The Problem

This is due to Illegal Adoption, Accidental Separation and Trafficking.

Illegal Adoption

Child laundering, or illegal adoption, is the stealing and selling of children to adopting parents, under false pretenses. Adoption agencies may sometimes be knowing participants in these transactions.

Forced Migration

Due to a variety of reasons including internal civil conflict, natural disasters, famine or political crisis.

Abduction

A child is stolen from their community and sold to adopting parents.

Child-Selling

A parent sells or surrenders their child usually to provide for other family members or survival.

Accidental Separation

A child may be released into the adoption system due to lack of resources to identify the child or search for their family.

Child trafficking is defined by the United Nations, as the kidnapping of a child for the purpose of slavery, forced labor, and exploitation.

Orphanage Exploitation

Children in orphanages being exploited as ‘attractions’ for tourists – contributing to the orphanage economy. Parents willingly give their children to these institutions, thinking they will receive education, better living conditions, and opportunities for the future.

Begging Trafficking

In this particularly cruel practice, children are forced to beg for money to give to their trafficker. Many children are maimed, drugged, or made ill and are typically kept in poor living conditions to inspire sympathy and charity from people like tourists.
